Perspective vs Perception

Understand the concept of Perspective vs Perception pushed me into learning more about psychology.

Sometimes, you need a really tangible understanding that push you to go deeper on a topic while it was here the whole time.

It’s like never going to that museum close to your place that you pass by everyday, but suddenly a friend come over and want to visit it.

People needs those unexpected opportunities for them to realize and unblock their mind.

That’s why doing a lot of activities, going out, trying new things and being curious would always be rewarded, as you increase your level of entrophy/randomness to meet situations that would ultimately lead to what you are looking for…

Perception

Perception is our personal way of interpreting the world, influenced by our experiences, biases, and emotions. It constitutes our subjective reality, often considered universal by those who are centered on their own perception.

Those who function primarily through perception tend to be critical, quick to judge, and easily offended.

Perspective

Perspective involves an openness to integrate the perceptions of others. It’s the ability to see the world from another’s point of view, which allows us to understand different realities and broaden our own vision. People capable of thinking in terms of perspective are generally more attentive, curious, and difficult to offend. They seek to understand rather than impose their vision.

The advantage of perspective lies in what he calls the “informational advantage”. By understanding others’ perceptions, we can better navigate social and professional interactions, which can lead to more harmonious relationships and more effective leadership. The good news is that this skill can be developed over time and with effort.

Conclusion

It’s been said that only 2% of the population thinks in terms of perspective while the rest thinks in terms of perception. This is hard to prove, as there are no formal investigations around it.

Thinking in terms of perspective may take time, and you may not see the direct benefits immediately. But you can train yourself to do so.

It will improve the relationships you have with people. However, it’s crucial to remain curious and ask questions to gather as much information as possible to understand the other person’s perception. After all, it’s very difficult to understand someone’s perspective when you know nothing about them.

Mastering this pattern has allowed me to improve myself as a human being, while also becoming more aware of the things happening around me.
